Piotr Dang Cichocki, Martin Kaphukusi, Tonga Boys, “Other Voices/Other Votes”

Szara Reneta and 1000HZ present a two-part radioplay produced at the recording microstudio Wave Diamond Records in Mzuzu. Persons behind „Other Voices, Other Votes” are Martin Kaphukusi (as a screenwriter, narrator, and producer), Piotr Dang Cichocki (as a producer), actors including members of the Tonga Boys: Albert Manda, Guta Manda, Solomon Nikho, and Myrius Mnthali.

The first part of the radio play is a narrative improvisation by Martin who assembled a morality play, horror, Nigerian TV series, and sermon. „Gate Man” is a radio show about a film about a gangster who becomes a bloodthirsty ghost.

The second part is an entertaining and anarchistic performance recorded at the Mzuzu market. During the hectic pre-election campaign in Malawi, Tonga Boys and several bystanders spontaneously took the roles of politicians, journalists, and voters.

Both parts refer to the ethno-fiction method elaborated by French anthropologist Jean Rouch and Nigerien actors Damouré Zika and Lam Ibrahim Dia. Ethno-fiction was the shared process of creating fictional narratives. Thies process gathered people of different cultural positions in the postcolonial world, for example, the ethnographer and his or her subjects.

„Other Voices, Other Votes” was initially presented at the Radiophrenia festival in 2019.
