Journalism is currently a side activity for me; I write occasionally, mostly on topics related to sound and music. You might be surprised, then, to see an interview I conducted in the summer of 2025 published in Miasteczko Poznań, a magazine devoted to Jewish culture and heritage. Let me explain (Polish only):
In 2017 and 2018, inspired by recordings of execution sites by Bolesław Wawrzyn (alias Michał Turowski, musician and field recordist, former head of the cult labels Oficyna Biedota, BDTA, Mozdok now Ropeworm)I began a series of recordings of old Jewish cemeteries in the Podtatrze region. In 2017, I published recordings from cemeteries in Zakopane and Nowy Targ, and in the following year from Czarny Dunajec and Podwilk in Orava. Recordings from Krościenko n/Dunajcem and Niedzica are in progress.
In 2025, I learned that Lucyna Borczuch, a regionalist and historian from Orava, had published a book entitled ‘Our Great-Grandparents’ Neighbours: In Search of the Jewish Community in Upper Orava’. This pioneering work on the Jews of the Polish part of Orava is based mainly on sources found in Polish, Hungarian and Slovak archives, as well as on interviews and fieldwork.
I passed on information about this publication to Marek Bochniarz, a journalist and secretary of the magazine Miasteczko Poznań, with whom I had collaborated on music and sound projects. He immediately asked me to interview the author of the book.
I invite you to read and listen to archival recordings of Jewish cemeteries in the Podtatrze region!
