On 27 September 2025, as part of the exhibition ‘Koalicja Wody’ (Water Coalition), a presentation of Sylwia Górak’s quadraphonic piece ‘Śpiew Syren’ (Song of the Mermaids) will take place in the former Jewish funeral home in Słupsk. I had the pleasure of mastering and post-producing this piece.
‘Śpiew syren’ is a sound sculpture dedicated to the problem of noise pollution and its impact on the lives of marine mammals, which Sylwia Górak created during her residency at the Centrum Aktywności Twórczej in Ustka in June 2025. The impulse for the work was a personal episode from the artist’s earlier stay on the Baltic coast – an encounter with a dead seal on the beach, interpreted as a symbolic ‘sign from the sea’, drawing attention to the consequences of human activity, including military tests and underwater noise.
